Linked-In : Public Profile URL

The Default Public Profile URL provided by LinkedIn, when you create your account, is generally a random URL which looks something like http://www.linkedin.com/pub/n/nnn/nnn.
There is an option to make it much more meaningful like http://www.linkedin.com/in/username.

It shows to those looking at your profile,  that you are serious about your professional image. It is far easier for anyone to remember a link to your LinkedIn profile, if it contains your name.  The default one is almost impossible to remember, unless they have it noted it down somewhere.

To change your default public profile URL follow these steps :

  • Sign in to Linked in, if you already haven’t done so 🙂
  • Go to Edit My Profile in Left hand pane
  • Click on Edit link, next to your default Public Profile URL (Under Profile tab)
  • You may need to click on Edit once again of different page. This time it would be top of the page
  • You’ll be shown your current URL as Your current URL is
  • You are given an option to Update this address
  • The new public profile URL will start with http://www.linkedin.com/in/
  • It is best to provide your name in the edit box and click Set Address

Every Tuesday I publish Tips on How to use LinkedIn effectively for your career. There are several articles that talk about this topic on the net. I present several common sense tips, based on my own experience.
